Many people face challenges in financial literacy, especially those experiencing traditionally marginalizing contexts and circumstances. Our mission is to elevate investment intelligence within these communities to support financial flourishing.

FinLit is an educational mobile app that promotes financial literacy through short, informative sessions that facilitate awareness, action, and application. This app empowers undergraduate students to cultivate sustainable money management habits that enhance their financial and overall well-being, increasing their financial literacy by learning how to earn, spend, save, and invest their money.

UX Research: Science of Learning

At the heart of our methodology is our Theory of Change, which is grounded in the understanding that positive change is possible through learning, and learning is a continuous process of development that entails three vital stages: Awareness, Action, and Application. As users gain awareness of fundamental financial concepts, they engage their learning in action, refining their skills in situated practice-based hypothetical scenarios and eventually transitioning to the application of their knowledge and skills to real-life financial opportunities.

Incorporating various learning theories such as Behavioral Theory and Constructivist Theory for the app UI and content, FinLit provides immediate feedback for users as they engage with the modules, and allows learners to shape their own learning experiences immediately upon onboarding.

Low-fi Paper Prototype

Employing the Design Thinking framework which encourages rapid prototyping focused empathizing with user experiences, we developed an initial paper prototype that featured 3 main components: onboarding, a full financial literacy lesson, and a real-life implementation tool.

We interviewed 20+ users to try our low-fi prototype and collected their feedback to iterate on our app UI and content.

Med-fi Figma Prototype

I created a full Figma prototype for users to try that built off of the feedback we gathered from our paper prototype. The main changes we added to the med-fi prototype was allowing users to customize their learning plans to reflect their current financial literacy level, and to implement a simulation exercise instead of a real-life tool as some learners might not be ready yet to try what they have learned immediately following the end of the lesson.
